The Helbreath Portal

Helbreath was a game that a lot of former SM/SMR  players such as the legendary female IRC/SM Webboard/SMR Forum jockey Cnh- flocked to.

It's been a sliceSo it's been nearly thirteen years since Helbreath Portal was founded in early 2001. It's been a wild ride for sure. I think this community, of all things, has affected many of our lives significantly in one way or another, and many of us met great friends we'll never forget. I know I did.

I grew up with this place. When I started getting involved I was barely sixteen years old, and now, in the closing years of my twenties, I remember just how big a role HBP played in my young life.

Those that grew up without the internet would never be able to comprehend how something that exists purely in virtual space could have any level of substance comparable to "real life," and yet, for many of us who've passed through this community in one form or another can attest that in many ways it's just as reflective of reality and just as consequential as anything physical. Well, I suppose almost just as much in more ways than not. But still.

I've been absent for many years. Life has taken me on many roads since I first took over the forums in late 2001, but despite my absence, I always occasionally popped in to have a look around and see how things were, and they were always doing well. Avour ran this place on her own, essentially, for more than half decade, and I think it's fitting for me to say that many of the experiences you've had since she came on-board sometime in 2002 would have been nigh impossible if it were not for her work, both here at HBP and within Helbreath. So, thanks, Avour—a lot.

So what's next? Well, not much for this place. It's had its run. Helbreath USA now has their own community portal, and while it's a fledgling one that doesn't have quite the vintage and maturity of this place, it's only a matter of time and it'll start to feel as familiar as here. As for me: well, this is probably the last you'll hear from me (though, you've not heard from me for years, so I guess that doesn't make much of a difference, does it?)

So, thanks for a great experience. I'll keep looking back on it fondly and remember how many of us grew up together. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
